Could possibly be a scam. If they cannot prove to you that it is a legit debt, I recommend not paying it. I would also look up the name of the collection agency to see if they are even legit and if not, report them to law enforcement as possibly being fraudulent. Most collection agencies will give you details regarding the debt and who was the original creditor. If this collection agency will not do that, then something smells fishy.

Write a letter demanding the show how the charge is valid. You must act quickly since generally you must write the letter within 30 days of getting notice. After that it will most likely take a court order to get them to check if it's valid or not. As long as it's within 7 years of when you last dealt with them they can pursue the debt. (Talking with them on the phone reset the time clock to zero as will writing a letter)

Have them tell you. It's either tell you now or tell a judge when they take you to court. Check your credit report. If they have put a negative mark on it, then contact the credit bureaus and dispute this claim.

I believe that if you truly owe a bill, you should pay it. However, collections agencies have to be kept in check.

I think they at least have to tell you who has referred you for collection, and what they say you owe them for....

If you agreed to buy it and you have it you gotta pay for it.
