Choosing between happiness and sorrow. Lithium is a metaphor in the song. Amy said she never used the drug before but it fit the song. Here, here is a link to explanations to all and every single one of thier songs ever released. The song is NOT a cover of Nirvana's. And the song is NOT about the drug Lithium. She used it as a METAPHOR!!!

The page is already on Lithium for you.

Since everyone already covered what Lithium really means to Evanescence, here's something really cool:
Lithium is an element in the scientific periodic table, the atomic mass is 7 and the proton count is 3.
Evanescence's name is derived from the word 'evanescent' which means to vanish or disappear after a short period of time. And did you know, J.K. Rowling used it in her Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix book as the vanishing spell 'evanesco'? The spell name appears twice in the book, once during Snape's potions class, and other times just as The Vanishing Spell. Bet you didn't.
And yes, they're right that lithium is a drug that is used to treat manic depression and stuff but it's used metaphorically, like in personification. It's not a cover of Nirvana's song- the lyrics are totally different and everything.

They are used in the treatment of bipolar disorder, since unlike most other mood altering drugs, they counteract both mania and depression. Lithium can also be used to augment other antidepressant drugs. It is also sometimes prescribed as a preventive treatment for migraine disease and cluster headaches.

because they suck and they stole the title from a badass Nirvana song, and stole the video idea from AFI - two bands that are so much better and Evanescence knows they could never even compare, but they still try and fail miserably.
