If five times the smaller of two consecutive integers is added to three times the larger, the result is 59. Find the integers.

5(x + 1)+ 3( x + 2) = 59
5x + 5 + 3x + 6 =59
8x + 11 = 59
-11 -11
8x = 48
x = 6
30 + 5 = 35 + 24 = 59
wow I think I got it. (but it says they are consecutive, how can that be? ) Thank you

1st Method:
5x + 3(x+1) = 59
8x + 3 = 59
8x = 56
x = 7
The answer is 7 and 8.

2nd Method:
Well, it's your notation... your answers are 7 and 8. The problem is that you wrote your consecutive integers as x+1 and x+2. Next time denote the smaller integer as x and the other as x+1. Then write your equation as

5x + 3(x+1)=59

The way you did the problem is probably leaving you confused. Your first integer was x+1, which is 7, and your second was x+2, which is 8. Your answers are 7 and 8.

3rd Method:
It would probably have been a little less confusing like this:

5(x)+3(x+1)=59
5x+3x+3=59
8x+3=59
8x=56
x=7

So:

x=7 (first integer)
x+1=8 (second integer)
