I often find many peope who visit Tenerife or some touristy beach off Costa del Sol, who rant about how spain is overrated and how much it sucked.... most people who visit spain is for the beaches, but most people don't know of the vast cultural and artistic whole that is Spain. Spain is a very diverse country from head to toe, and people can't possibly judge it just by visiting one city or region...

I love Spain, but there's this one thing.

My niece went to Spain with her friend. They were sitting at a
square somewhere near Madrid in broad daylight. Some guys approached, yanked my niece's day bag. My niece doesn't speak Spanish very well but she resisted while her friend was bewildered, looking around for help. There were plenty of other people nearby, but no one did anything. The guy punched my niece in the face and took the day bag and fled.

So my niece and her friend went to the police and after taking a brief report, just told her to go back to her hostel. The police wasn't too sympathetic at the time, and they didn't do anything for her at all, except offer her condolescences.

I'm sure this is an isolated incident involving violence on a tourist, but on a personal level, it is horrible to go through that and still expect my niece to harbor fond memories of Spain. I don't think I will go there if the people will just stand by and watch while I'm getting mugged!

I didn't think Tenerife was overrated, but I am american and mostly europeans go there. i dont think it shows the real spain like you said. it's beach and resort only -- much like the hotel/resort beaches in mexico, jamaica, etc. is to americans. just a place people go to vacation not to really soak up a lot of culture.

i will admit to having the best paella and sangria i ever ate/drank in my life -- i know that's typical but it was sooo goood.

~Being an ancestoral Basque, those SOB's are overrated once was wanna be has beens and they have ruined our once beautiful country. But if all you care about is laying on a beach and culture be damned, I suppose you're right. Shallow, but right.
