I have to chaparone an upcoming prom. I am heavy (200+ lbs.) and in my thirties. What can I wear that will be appropriate for this formal occassion?

Can you find out (pictures, etc) what chaperones wore in previous years? Something classic but also "special" would be good - a chiffon skirt (your best conservative length) and a dressy but "covered" top. A dressy halter dress with a shrug or topper to keep from being too "bare". A not-quite-cocktail dress in a very pretty color.
Browse as many on-line shopping sites as you can find - don't be afraid to try something a little different.

Wear something of a formal wear, in a short version. Silks would be nice. Even a nice silk suit, or an after five dress would be good. The girls will probably be wearing long gowns, this I would not recommend for a chaperon, but defiantly after five. The same style that you would wear to a wedding would be very appropriate.

I wouldn't go full on formal but I would consider a tuxedo suit (Lane Bryant or Roaman's) or a very nice dress or semi formal suit such as you would wear to an evening wedding. It would help if I know how tal you were. I too weigh a bit over 200 and I am (hate to admit it late thirties)

If you are fairly tall (5'6" or taller) wear Palazzo pants and a silky shirt with bold jewlery and a really nice up do and strappy high heel shoes. Don't let being a big girl who is no longer in her teens stifle you flair for dress.

Check out Torrid.com or Lane Bryant.com for ideas, they even have some nice stuff at JCPenny.
May I suggest these pants

I think a chaparone should where something conservative yet chic. Nothing too flashing or not too much cleavage or skin. Hope that helps.

A long skirt and a jacket would be appropriate. You can wear something sparkly under the jacket.
