how do I know the gender; and how big can it get?

They are normally 4-6 feet full grown but can reach lengths of 8ft+. As far as if the snake is male or female, you will need to go to a herpetologist for the snake to be probed, unless your local vet sees reptiles and will do that, mine sees snakes. They are usually not very aggressive snakes, but are known to strike if you try to capture them in the wild. Good luck to you and your snake :)

One of these is eventually my dream to own....but they are listed as threatened/endangered in my state and it would be illegal to own one right now.
They are highly aggressive arboreal snakes. They get anywhere from 6-10 feet long. A proper enclosure would be more vertical than horizontal.
They are the only species of arboreal snake in most of the US and will drop out of trees on to prey- it is pretty cool to see.

As for sexing- go to a reptile vet and have your snake probed. It is really the only sure way to tell for most snake species.

101inches is the record length but usually around 4 to 6 feet like someone said.

By first getting a shovel.Second, point to neck, and finally third drop and push the shovel, w/an aggressive growling sound. And there you have it ;)
