why is it that after each feed my breasts become very soft and look as if they are empty?

Hmm, that would have to be because they are. Your baby has just fed, he/she has sucked out all the milk which will in a sense deflate your breasts. If you will notice after a while they will fill up again and become full, it is your body replenshing and getting ready for the next feeding. Contact your nurse for more info if this is your first child and first time breast feeding.

congrats btw on the new baby!

Because they are empty. They will produce more milk and become full again. Then you will feed again and they will empty.
The more your breasts are emptied the more milk you will produce.

The reason for this is because the baby has just emptied the milk ducks.. during the next few hours they will refill and then you will nurse again.. your body will continue to produce milk as long as you nurse the baby...if your still new at it the milk will come back sooner as time goes on....its almost like supply and demand...good luck...
