The largest sheep ranch in the world is located in Australia. The number of sheep on the ranch is 8/3 the number of uninvited kangaroos grazing on the pastureland. Together heards of these two animals number 88,000 How many sheep and how many kangaroos roam the ranch?

I think I am way wrong 8/3 = 2.2 (right?)
or would I keep it as a fraction?
so (2.2 + x) + x = 88,000
but wouldn't I want to turn the 2.2 into a whole number by multiplying by 10? and if so do I also multiply the 88,000?? Please help, I turned up with x = 40,000 but I don't see how my equation can be right. Thank you this is my last one for the night =) I appreciate all your help.

ok you all are saying to multiply by 3 is that only because the bottom number of the fraction is 3 and if it is 3/8 how would that become 3x and 8x (this is becoming more confusing)

Let the number of kangaroos be "x"
then the number of sheep is (8/3)x
then the sum of these two counts is 88000
i.e. (8/3)x + x = 88000
Multiply evenly by 3 on both sides,
8x + 3x = 264000

11x = 264000
x = 264000/11
x = 24000
the number of kangaroos is 24000
the number of sheep is 88000 - 24000 = 64000

mathematics requires good reasoning.
good luck

8/3 times the number of kangaroos means you got to multiply the no. of sheep with the assumed no. of kangaroos ,.......so the equation becomes 8/3*x +x=88,000 which solves out to x=24000.
Also, using a fraction or decimal value doesn't make much of a difference but the accuracy depends on how many digits u consider after the decimal point

Also this way to get you used to fractions.

8/3X +X = 88,000 now add the implied 1 in front of the lone X to 8/3. that is 3/3 = 1, so add 3/3 to 8/3 = 11/3X

11/3X = 88,000 divide 88,000 by 11/3, or invert and multiply

88,000/1 * 3/11 =264,000/11 which equals one of your answers, 24,000. There are faster ways, but you need to get comfortable with fractions first.

Multiply evenly by 3 on both sides,
8x + 3x = 264000

11x = 264000
x = 264000/11
x = 24000

Man that was soooo easy! Love math!

the # of sheep would be (8/3)x

so: (8/3)x + x = 88000

(11/3)x = 88000
multiply by (3/11):
x = 24000

sheep: (8/3)(24000) = 64000
kangaroos: 88000 - 64000 = 24000
