Example 1: (actually happened)

A drug dealer was arrested nearby a school. By law, penalties are harsher if you are within 1,000 feet of a school (I think that's the distance). To get to the school from where he was, you had to go 500 feet west and 800 feet south. By using the pythagorean theorem, you can find out that he was within 1000 feet, even though it would take 1,300 feet to get to the school.

Example 2:
(my friend is a construction worker who does this):

A room is supposed to be 8 feet and 15 feet. To check to see if the room is corrected shaped (i.e., a right triangle exists), he measures the diagonal of the room. If it turns out to be 17 feet (since 8^2+15^2 =17^2), then a right angle exists and the room is the right size. If not, then either one of the sides is the wrong length, or the room does not have a right angle (if it's not a right angle, the Pythagorean Theorem does not hold).

You mean the Pythagorean Theorem? You're looking at one right now. Screen sizes of computer monitors are measured by diagonals. So to get a monitor in a desired size for a particular aspect ratio, you'd need to apply the Pythagorean Theorem.

When building a house, you can get your corners square by measuring a set distance along each wall and then checking the distance between the end points.

If the distance along the hypotenuse matches what Pythagoras theorem says it should be, then the walls are at a right angle.
