According to researchers, more than 8 hours sleep each night is bad for you. We have all known that too little sleep is bad for you, this study suggests that the opposite is also bad.

According to the researchers at the University of California, those who sleep 9-10 hours a night seem to have more problems, ranging from difficulty in falling asleep, staying asleep, plus a whole load of other problems.

It seems that those who sleep eight hours have the least problems. Those who sleep 7 hours each night also had problems falling asleep and waking up feeling full of beans.

Previous studies have focussed on too little sleep. Some previous studies have suggested that too little sleep (less than 7 hours each night) reduces your life expectancy.

In this study, 1004 adults had to answer a sleep questionnaire. The questions asked how many hours they slept each night (it was an ongoing questionnaire), whether they found it easy to fall asleep, did they wake during the night, did they wake up early in the morning and could they not get back to sleep again, did they suffer from fatigue during the day.

Those who slept too much were more likely to experience all the problems on the questionnaire than those who slept eight hours each night.

One of the researchers said that people who sleep too much find it hard to rest at night because they spend too much time in bed. He suggested one way to get rid of insomnia is to spend less time in bed.

He suggested that there might be a link between sleeping long hours and depression.

It depends on your age. A recent study showed that out of all the age groups, teens needed the most sleep with a range of 9-12 hours. Children came in second. All age groups did better with adequate sleep.

Adults now days in the U.S. are getting less than they need, around 6 hours or less. This can be dangerous, it affects reaction time while driving which is why there are many accidents during commute times. It affects people at work and at play too.

Getting the right amount of sleep nightly is very important.

I can function with no less than 6 and no more than 9. Also I have noticed that the closer to midnight it is when I fall asleep the worse I will feel. If I go to sleep at 8 I can wake up at 5 and feel great. If I go to sleep at midnight or later, no matter how many hours I get I will feel tired at some point toward the day. Of course you have to take into consideration your health and diet.

7-9, but it varies person to person. Some people only need 5 or 6 to feel rested, others need closer to 10 (i.e., my mother!).
Sleep is a time when your body finally has a chance to repair all the damage done to it during the day to muscles, tissues, including skin. Most growth occurs during sleep states as well because your body isn't using any energy to move around, talk and think as it would be during the day. It also gives your brain time to "decompress," repair cells, and turn off... sort of. [Dreams occur as a result of this "off" state, where you no longer control what images get fired from your subconscious.]

It depends how tired I am, but I typically sleep 7 to 9 hours. Why? Sleep is an important recovery phase, in which the muscles rest and the brain replenishes neurotransmitters which have become depleted by the day's activity.

I normally just get five hours of sleep. SO, any chance I get catnap, I try to doze off--in the bus, in the train, and in the office during lunch break. To give more sleep.
