are you talking about in a job? - because a lot of states don't require a business to need a reason to dismiss you - depends on where you work

If you mean like from the dinner table - then it would be pretty odd for someone to have to issue a written anything

If you signed an at will employment agreement(i.e your application. Always read the fine print), then yes. If you think you were treated unfairly then take it up at your unemployment hearing, that is if you file for unemployment.
