Washington DC never burned to the ground. The White House was partially born and rebuilt but not destroyed in the War of 1812.
When the British captured the White House, the first lady Dolly Madison had all the priceless art taken somewhere else for safety and many British soldiers entered the home, ate a lot of food and trashed it before setting it on fire.
