Maybe they are the same.
Since you guys are educated about what a "red neck" is now, how does this compare to your term of a "Chav"?
Are they the same?

A Chav usually means a common Person that dresses in Track Suits all the Time Or wears Pyjamas in the Street usually young Women, someone with a Cigarette constantly hanging from there Mouth and Drinking Lager and fighting , and throwing there weight around. It means a Scumbag. The Word Originated in the Working Class Estates of Liverpool and London. A Red Neck means the Country Version of Above, Someone who drinks Lager and fights with People. Where I come from the men are called Slags and Scumbags and the Women are called Scangers. In Ireland they are Copying the English the Girls in Housing estates are wearing Pyjamas in the Street in various Cities. Chav is Pronounced with a soft Chav not a hard soundig word like chawv.

Never heard of a "chav", is this a UK word? I am in the USA.
Here in the USA, "red neck" is an insulting word for a rural working class white person. You can insult various colors of rural working people if you like, but remember who grows the food that feeds everyone. I guess you have bad words for rural working class white people in the UK as well, and I really don't want to know. It's good that there are different kinds of people in the world, so that we can get to know one another, but I don't think learning new bad words to call each other counts.

I don't really know what 'chavs' are but it sounded like they were white trash lower-middle class people in the UK.

Red necks are usually found in rural areas of the southern US and are also lower-middle class and often considered white trash. Conservative Republicans are sometimes called Red Neck as well just because most red necks are conservative - against abortion, gay marriage, and other stuff. Red Necks are often usually labeled as racists and they are all about the Confederate flag from the Civil War.

It's not only a social class thing, it's also somewhat a political thing.

Hicks are similar, but they're just from any rural area in the US.
