Hi.
Do not! cut the yarn.
In the pattern there is a link over the place that says single crochet.
it has nice pictures on how to do single crochet.
Did you look at it?
This is exactly what you should do after you do your first chain.
If the pictures don't help you should really try to get someone to show you.

No, you don't cut the yarn, but in the first row of work what you do is to work your first sc in the second chain stitch below the hook. At the end of the row where it tells you to chain, you simply do a yo pull through a loop in the last stitch worked and turn for the next row.
