Did all the actors in the movie actually do all of the driving themselves or was all the driving done by stunt actors?

No. The standard of the day was to have a prop car front with the actors sitting there while background film or the road and traffic played behind them.

The stunt work was quite elaborate (the cab chase at the end) and the actors were not allowed to participate. The studios hate risking injury to their top stars. Jonathan Winters really did destroy the gas station set but that was not a sturdy structure to begin with. I know Phil Silvers also went into the water during the river crossing, but that was a set and tightly controled.

No way. When you have millions of dollars invested in a picutre, the company's insurance carriers insist that stunt drivers do any driving involving speed or collisions. Not only don't they want injuries, but it could jeopardize the completion of the entire picture.

Once in a while, you hear of a star insisting he does his own stunts. But with one or two exceptions, and none recently, they are not allowed to do "stunts". (exception: Steve McQueen, I understand....but that was a long time ago. )
