Whats the best way to check for carbon build up on my 1977 2 stroke, 70hp, 3cyl Johnson. I took off the air silencer and she looks great through there. I've gotta be checking it wrong. Thanks.

What would be the easiest way? Look through the ignitor plug holes?

The majority of carbon build-up in any 2 stroke engine is #1 in the combustion chamber and #2 exhaust ports #3 piston rings and crankcase including transfer ports. Pretty much in that order.

Fuel is awful now, I use "Carbon Guard" outboard fuel additive, I did'nt beleive much in them until I saw a guy use the stuff on a badly carboned outboard, the carbon was blowing out the exhaust in chunks, the motor ran great after that, now I'm a believer, use "Carbon Guard", 1 oz treats 8 gallons, so the stuff is fairly inexpensive, and keeps the motor "Squeeky Clean", try it, my friend always uses it, and he always gets like 20 years out of an outboard. Any Marine store, or outboard shop has "Carbon Guard". I checked with several outboard mechanics, and they all suggested using it to avoid problems.

there is a large plate bolted on the port side of the motor. remove it and look. that's the exhaust.
