I do not think they are really paid salary anymore... they freelance, or have a contract to work exclusively for one company for the duration of their contract....

artists (pencilers) are paid per page and it depends on many things... popularity (fame), talent, reputation for delivery.... etc... can be anywhere 80.00 per page to 295.00 or more.. per book would be, 1800.00 to 6700.00+...and turn out is dependent on the artist... have seen some do one a day... and some as few as three a week... also amount they get done is dependent on the writer, editor... issues average between 21-23 pages per... technically if the writer produced? a penciler "could" do an issue a month....

whether contracted or not, the penciler also almost always gets: one copy of everything the company puts out; twenty-five copies (or more) of the comic the artist works on, the original artwork back (the issue is split between the penciler and inker) and royalties for every issue sold after a set amount have sold (like maybe, 60% of each dollar of the comic above the first one hundred thousand sold...) .. penciler gets a higher royalty than inker, writer.... contracts are usually not offered till you prove yourself indispensible to the company....

add on: on rates? an artist with no prior pro work done, just starting would get probably around 75.00 -80.00 a page.... an artist that has been around for twenty plus years? the 6000.00+ an issue (295.00per page equals 6500.00) but? they may only get six comics a year... or might be contracted which standard contract allows for ten issues yrly usually

and the guy (hellion?) is right.. Kubert School of Graphic Arts is the only one of it's kind, people come from all over the world to attend.... .. located in beautiful (yuck) downtown Dover NJ.... although I heard it was moving... he is also right in a way that it is difficult... but not completely... I used to hear "it's not what you know, it's who you know" from most of the artists that were working in comics... but if you want it? and you work at it... and you beat on doors, you will get in.... there is always a need for artists... penciler, inker and letterers.

Most of that has happened by now, but I guess I'll throw in my opinion... Superman has a higher intellect than the Hulk, not to mention all of his other sometimes dopey abilities, Kal wins. Batman has more gadgets than Captain America, perhaps smarter, plus isn't Captain America dead right now? Storm'd beat Wonder Woman easily. Well the Flash and Quicksilver...That's hard to say. Quicksilver is an *** sometimes, ultimate Quicksilver is into the twincest, so I'm gonna just go with the Flash. The Silver Surfer, he's just more powerful. Spider-Man would win hands down, he's got more experience. Lobo scares me...But I'm cluess as to who would win. They're both immortal, so, wtf. Well Steel used to be actually Steel, then I'd say he had a chance, but Tony Stark has all of that money that he could easily build something to thump the chump. Ms. Marvel could suck up anything Power Girl throws at her. I'm so much more of a Huntress fangirl, but Elektra has more agility. Thor. Thor wins everything. Thor has a hammer. Well Jubilee may be easy on the eyes, but her powers? Neh. Robin wins. Jubilee doesn't even have powers anymore... Magneto. The Joker is an evil genius, the Green Goblin fails at everything he tries (unless it's making Peter Parker cry which isn't saying much) X-Men, for a number of reasons. Waaaaaay more X-Men, waaaaaay better powers. And Teen Titans couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. JLA. DC wins, because they don't rely on bringing back every other character after killing them off. The also don't rely on making numerous films, even if they start to get sucky. In my opinion, DC is more quality orientated. Marvel is more quanity.

Comic Book Artist Salary

hard job to get, but once you're established and have proven you can deliver consistently, you can make about $6000 per comic you draw. most artists try to crank out 1 page a day every day, maybe more if they can handle it. theres 22 pages of art in a comic, so thats pretty much a month's work right there.

also, royalties and stuff need to be hashed out contractually, as well as original art ownership. its different from case to case, but nowadays, the artist has a lot more rights than in past decades.

REALLY hard job to get unless you're great at what you do, and you have to start at the bottom. when i submitted stuff to marvel some years back, they only hired ppl in the top 5%. they rated me at 13% or so. they've revamped the hiring policy several times now though. i'm not sure what its like presently. if you're serious about it, try to look up stuff on Joe Kubert's school of comic arts. best place i think you could find for what you're interested in. good luck!
