The only thing that's the same each time it happens is if I'm sewing too many layers or denim or corduoroy but I use the right needle..... I keep the tension at 0 and it's threaded correctly.... but obviously I'm doing something wrong.. I'm still pretty much a beginner!!

Try changing the tension on your sewing machine. If you have the manual, look up what tension you should be using with your fabric. Otherwise, you can look this up on the Internet I am sure. Also, is your needle very old? It may be too dull. Sometimes when you are sewing a lot of layers you need to raise the presser foot and guide the fabric with your hand while you stitch -- and I usually turn the wheel by hand (instead of using the foot pedal) to make sure I am in control of the stitching.

Cheap thread sucks. It can have little slubs in it that you dont' notice until it gets tangled.

Make sure your bobbin isn't in backwards. That can make it bunch up and tangle on you.

Make sure the thread is going thru the needle the correct way (either R --> L or L-->R). Just that one little detail will make it screw up.
