It gets caught up in probate for freaking ever (up to 2 years)....and the state will deduct up to 50% of your estate. That's pretty unusual for that much, but it depends on where your estate lies (property, trusts, bank accounts, etc.). I suggest you write a will. It's pretty cheap and most lawyers offer that service.
