I knew the answer to this and was going to tell you, but when I checked on here it seems that many others have already told you that it was a British half-penny for days of yor. Soooooo, based on the fact that I already knew it, please give me the best answer. It would be the right thing to do.

Please put a penny in the old man's hat. If you haven't got a penny then a haypenny (half penny) will do. If you haven't got a halfpenny then God bless you/

A ha-penny or halfpenny is just that, half a penny. It was legal British currency until 1969.

Half-penny, it was a British coin back in the day. I don't even think they exist anymore.

it's actually spelled "ha'penny", it shortened version of "halfpenny". at the time ofthe song being written it was one of the lowest coin denominations in England.
