The heater is actually working but only blows out a little bit of heat through the defrost. When I change the dial to floor, or any other setting, nothing happens. It will work normal about 1 time out of 25. Any idea whats the deal?

Thermostat may be stuck. Or, heater core is blocked.

most vehicles and jeeps included use vacuum from the engine to switch which vent the a/c or heat come out of. When this vacuum is not supplied the a/c system defaults to blowing outof the defrost ducts. ( If it works ok when set to a/c then this is not your problem) to check to see if you hav a vacuum problem pop the hood and on the passenger side follow the a/c pipes and the heater hoses to wear they go through the fire wal the will be a plastic vacuum tube coming through the wall. these hoses get brittle and break all the time. check the hose for breaks and if none the carefully take the hose off ussually there is a place to disconnect it and start the engine and make sure that vacuum is making it to the hose. if not you'll hve to fig. out why. if thee is vacuum then the problem could be inside the car in the dash and you may wnt to seek some professional help. good luck.

Do you park near a tree?
It could be blocked because of leaves. The same thing happened to my 98 Grand Cherokee Jeep. Thats why 1 out of 25 times it works because the leaf thats causing the problem somtimes moves out of the way.

You may need one or more of the following:

1. check your antifreeze, make sure you have some in your vehicle.

2. is your car thermometer working ( does the gage to tell you that your car is warming up moves when the car has warmed up after 5 minutes.

3. It may be your switch for the heat, theres a switch that helps control the air and the heat under the hood, it may need to be replaced if its blowing but the switch isnt putting on the heat.

a broken vacum line can be the cause of poor heat for the heating system there is a blower motor a blower resistor and the dials . blower motor can short out causing it to work intermittently a resistor may cause to work only on high speed if it is manual speed but i believe this car resistor is designed like the caddys resistor if so replace it because this resistor has given my friend a run for his money the controller may cause more problem

if you put your control on high and it stills feels like there is very little air coming through and you can hear the blower motor is actually on high then your problem is most likely caused by a plugged evaporator core you can have this flushed out and cleaned at any shop for about 200 bucks. you could do it yourself but if you dont know enough about cars then it would be too hard to explain

i own a repair shop, and it needs a new inside control unit on it,that's why its not working right,,you can get a good one at a junk yard for around 25 bucks i usually get a good used one, they usually last just as good ,and a lot cheaper also, there not hard to install either,it only takes a few minutes to install one of these, good luck,i hope this help,s.

check under the hood and behind the heater controls for a vacum leak.

The blower motor resistor.

Try the other speads. if other speads work then thats what it is.

You could have a Brolken Fround wire or bad ground.
