Ok well u can rule out pretty much all sport horses!!! Horse breeds that are recognised within the Western ring are what you should be aiming for. Western is a particular style of riding if you are unsure..(im not sure how horse-savvy you are so i thought id explain that!). Going to a western competition would give you a chance to look at the some great breeds suitable for you.. dont be afraid to ask....horse people LOVE to talk about their horses!!!!!!!. i would strongly suggest Appaloosas!!! I breed them at home and are relativly easy to look after, with great feet, strong build and are very affectionate and well known for their laid-back nature (well most are anyway!)1/4horses are also fantastic and love to trail all over the place. But just remember their there are exceptions to every breed, every now and then you will come across psychotic 1/4 horse and bombproof warmbloods. It really depens on the individual horse, but yeah stick for the western horses... and definatly look at appaloosas.. they are just so cute!!!!!

Get a job in a boarding stable and learn your way around horses there. You'll get a lot of hands on experience.
The way you worded your question, it sounds as though you don't intend to take very good care of a horse. You want a horse that will stay healthy and you want one that won't require maintenance costs and yet is bomb proof. So you are going to pay for a good horse - then ruin it by turning it out on a grassless pasture and expect it to thrive?
Horses are expenisve pets. No matter how healthy a horse is, they still need annual vaccinations, they need to have their teeth floated, they need shelter from the elements, clean water, regular worming, quality feed, fresh, dry hay, have their hooves trimmed every 5-7 weeks and daily grooming - including picking muck out of the bottoms of their hooves.
Wouldn't you rather have a pet rock?

I think you need to work around horses for a while before you make this kind of decision. There is no such thing as a low maintenance horse. I agree with north. You don't sound like you intend to take care of a horse.

If it is going to be a "fun" horse and used on trails I would suggest a Tennesse Walking horse. They have a very smooth walk, they do not trot at all so it is easy on you when you do long trails... I know there is another breed that walks this same way but the name escapes me... They are generally very healthy and as low maintenance as a horse can be.
Trust me on the trail thing.. you don't want anything that is bumpy if you're not an experience rider or wanting to do long rides.

Low Maintenance? Good luck! HA. I wouldn't be worried about what breed but what personality is best for you. Work with a trainer to find a horse that is trail safe and kind and try not to focus so much on a breed unless you are certain that say, you just have to have a quarter horse. A mixed breed (grade) horse is just as lovely as a pure bred.

no horse is low maintenance. u sound like u are inexperienced. i would suggest going to a stable and volunteering. also take some lessons. u need to have experience before owning a horse. they are a huge responsibility and take lots of time and care. i hope this helps u.

Depending on what you are looking for in a horse, what is your ability and knowledge, almost any breed of horse is good.
Make sure to shop around and bring someone you trust that knows what to look at before buying a horse. If you want to ride, buy a older horse that is sound and is good for trail ridding. You will have a bit of work to do at home to get him/her used to the new environment.
Just go with your gut instinct and ask a lot of people that is used to horses and go check the horse twice and even three times before making a decision.
Good Luck and enjoy.

I would have to tell you to go with a American Quarter Horse or American Paint horse. both are very laid back, calm, intelligent breeds of horses, and their sizes can range from small to 16 hands. No specific 'breed' of horse just naturally loves trails. Each horse is different and enjoys doing different things. It all depends on what the horse has been exposed to and if it's been on trails and such. Quarter horses and Paints are generally very laid back, but each one is very different.

Welsh Pony
Haflinger Pony
----------------------(okay enough with ponies)
American Quarter Horse
American Paint Horse (I recommend)
Pintabian (I also recommend)
Arabian
----------------------
Most importantly choose a horse that fits you. It's doesn't have to be some breed that somebody suggests. Go crazy and just find the horse that YOU want. Not what somebody else wants. Find the horse color YOU want.
