this was not true in 1991. I did my research. But you know if you say something long enough eventually it becomes true. Such is the case. The latest data that I could find says there are about 700,000 black males in jails AND prison. and about 600,000 in college. (now this includes jail, which are just people who couldn't make bond) I think if you only include only prison then we college boys might be a little ahead but its a dead heat.

Whats interesting as that the rate of Blacks going to college has actually increased since 1991, but unfortunately the rate of black males getting locked up has increased at a faster rate.

Something is amiss. What do we do?

also, this refers to "college age" which was 17-25. But obviously there are some who can spend that whole time in jail while a college boy will usually graduate in 4 to 5 years

chinese guy - Prison is where you go AFTER you have been found guilty.

Jail is where you go when you get arrested, most people get out until thier trial. But poor people ofetn have to stay thier until thier court date, even though they haven't been found guilty yet.

Well...the only thing that you (or anyone else) can do is keep being the best that you can be. By your questions and the answers that you give, you evidently are on the right track. (You seem to be an educated, intelligent and articulate black man.)
I realize that for many young black men (and poor young men of all racial backgrounds) obtaining an education (despite all of the programs, scholarships, etc.) for some is an overwhelming task...(many inner city and rural schools are under funded, poorly staffed, not to mention peer and social discouragements, etc.)
But, one has to have a goal and be single minded and determined to reach that goal. That often means personal sacrifices....and no easy ways out. Sometimes there are too many temptations to slack off or give in...that is when one fails.
I suggest after you complete your education and you become a success, mentor another young black man and encourage him...so that he in turn can be successful too.

I believe that statistic is inaccurate because of the age range they use to determine this "fact".
They take the number of black men in college which is around 18-24(on average) and put it againest the number of black men in jail which ranges from an 18 year old first time offender to an 82 year old with a lifetime sentence who just hasn't died yet. So those statistics are definitely flawed.

Well, what is the difference between prison and jail? and the difference between college and university?Anyway, blacks are not born bad. Some people are forced to break the law, forced by the society.
