Symptoms of Brain Tumors

The symptoms of brain tumors depend mainly on their size and their location in the brain. Symptoms are caused by damage to vital tissue and by pressure on the brain as the tumor grows within the limited space in the skull They also may be caused by swelling and a buildup of fluid around the tumor, a condition called edema. Symptoms may also be due to hydrocephalus, which occurs when the tumor blocks the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and causes it to build up in the ventricles. If a brain tumor grows very slowly, its symptoms may appear so gradually that they are overlooked for a long time.

The most frequent symptoms of brain tumors include:

Headaches that tend to be worse in the morning and ease during the day,
Seizures (convulsions),
Nausea or vomiting ,
Weakness or loss of feeling in the arms or legs,
Stumbling or lack of coordination in walking (ataxic gait),
Abnormal eye movements or changes in vision,
Drowsiness,
Changes in personality or memory, and
Changes in speech

Yes!!! Anyone that has a change in personality should demand to get a cat scan of their brain. If you have a good doctor they will order it for you. However, many that have the personality disorders only consult a psychiatrist who put them on pills or a psychologist who wants to find the deeper issue. The tumor will go unknown. I know, because I had a very dear friend, who was diagnosed bipolar, and only when his mother demanded a test of his brain, they found a tumor. Scans of the brain should always be demanded to be done when personality changes occur, only to rule out something more that can be causing the problem. Pills aren't always the answer to personality changes. There could be an under lying problem.

As someone who has been successfully operated on to remove a brain tumor that was nowhere near any areas that could affect cognitive functions I can say:

My wife told me that there was a before operation me and an after operation me. The physical effects caused by the tumor were a loss of hearing and a degradation of balance.

The effects on my personality were due to gaining a different and more complete outlook on mortality and life in general and knowledge of what is important in life.

Yes it can. I know from experience. My father in law had a brain tumor A huge one at that. and after the surgery, he became a totally different person. He became almost like he was bulletproof. And secretive with his family. He started taking all the pressure on himself. He was never like that. He always went to the Dr when he had a cold or any symptoms of anything. He would just say, "Idont need a doc, Im fine!" I dont know if it was fear that he was going to find out something new, or that he thought that he was bulletproof. But he totally changed.
