It is named that after the guy who had it made, paid for it and donated it to hockey in 1892. But at the time, the trophy was only the upper bowl. Lord Frederick Stanley of Preston was the Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893. This is the person who represents the King of England in Canadian Government and deals with the Canadian Prime Minster.

It all started on March 18, 1892, at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association. Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club from Government House, delivered the following message on behalf of Lord Stanley, the Earl of Preston and Governor General of Canada:

Shortly thereafter, Lord Stanley purchased a silver cup and set the following preliminary conditions to govern the annual competition:

Each winning team to have the club name and year engraved on a silver ring fitted on the Cup.
The Cup to remain a challenge competition and not the property of any one team, even if won more than once.

The first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club, champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada for 1893. Ironically, Lord Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England in the midst of the 1893 season. Nevertheless, the quest for his trophy has become one of the world's most prestigious sporting competitions.

The Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America.[1] Originally inscribed the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, the trophy was donated by Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892 as an award for Canada's top-ranking amateur hockey club, decided by the acceptance of a challenge from another league championship team. Then in 1915, a gentlemen's agreement between two professional hockey organizations, the National Hockey Association (NHA) and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), was reached in which their respective champions would face each other for the Stanley Cup. After a series of league mergers and folds, it became the de facto championship trophy of the NHL in 1926. The Cup would later become the official de jure NHL championship prize in 1947.

Lord Stanley was the Prime Minister of Canada. He offered the Cup a prize for the winner of the tournament; over a hundred years ago. Unlike any other sport, you get your name on it, and it goes back to the Hall of Fame after everyone gets a turn with it, when their team wins. In all other sports, they make a new trophy every year.
