swapped power cord, checked memory,swapped hard drive. nothing worked. then one day i just gave it another try and it started up....ran fine for a month and the same thing happened

I would say that there are two possible causes.

One is that one of the pc cards came loose. Often times when something like a modem or sound card is not seated properly, it will cause the compter to not power on. This can be caused by bumping it, or just from the cards heating and cooling, expanding and contracting and creeping a little bit out of the slots. Used to happen more often than now, but it is still something to look at.

Otherwise, it could be just a flaky board. Next time it happens, try unplugging it, hitting the power button while it is unplugged (this discharges the capacators on the board) then plug it in and try it again.
