I feel very confident that you need a new battery. In the shop I work in we end up changing batteries several times a day, and what you have described sounds like a typical dead batter. Once your vehicle is started, it no longer uses the battery except to complete the electrical circuit. The vehicle actually draws all electrical power from the alternator. So as long as the alternator is good, the car will run all day without a problem. If the battery is bad, it will not hold a charge and will not have the cold cranking amps (CCA) needed to start your car. If you are still a bit leary about spending the money for a new battery, consider this, SEARS can perform a DieHard service(battery, starter, alternator test) on any battery, and if the battery tests bad, you can purchase a new battery and they will install it(installation is covered under the diehard service). As well, virtually every major car parts store (i.e. Checker, M&O Schucks, Advance Auto Parts, Napa, Auto Zone, etc...) offers battery and alternator testing at little or no charge, so you can always get a jump then head to one of them and get it tested to be safe.

Sounds like time for a new battery. If it stays running after jumped until you shut it off again, the alternator is ok, otherwise the car would die out while running too. Battery life is usually anywhere from 3-6 years.

It sounds like the cable connections to the battery are bad. They are allowing enough amperage to pass through so the lights light up... but when you try to pull high amps through you lose continuity due to corroded and dirty connections.

Remove the negative battery clamp then the positive clamp. Clean both with a small wire bush (wear eye protection!!!!).
Reconnect the positive clamp (red or + )
Reconnect the negative clamp (black or - )

That should cure your problem... you may still have to jump the car off and drive for around 30 minutes to charge the battery back up.

If you are still having problems get your alternator checked.

Good luck

You need a NEW BATTERY!!!!

Spend the Money for a Battery. It's better than getting towed.
