Yeah, a lot of them do fly south for the winter, but some don't. For example, there are some annoying pigeons who hang around the roof across the street. Temperatures have been well below freezing, with wicked wind chill, for the past couple of weeks!

Birds are endotherms like mammals, which means that they can produce heat metabolically, at the expense of energy that they get from food. Unlike mammals, birds don't accumulate fat tissues, so they are constantly active and eating in order to keep their metabolism working.
The feathers are great insulators, especially the body cover feathers; these have a basal part that is plumulaceous (=like the down feathers of chicks) and traps air that is kept warm by the heat produced by the bird. In addition, many adult birds have real down under the cover feathers, enhancing the insulation.
During the months of autumn, the birds become gradually acclimatized to the lower temperatures; birds at low temperatures have somewhat lower basal metabolic rates, and some may undergo limited periods of hypothermia.
Birds also have behavioral adaptations, and they stay huddled/inside refuges (in holes, dense trees, etc.) during the coldest periods.

Birds have feathers to keep themselves warm basically. Also to keep themselves warm, they try to stay in warm places and don't fly around much. They only fly around if absolutely necessary. They try not to lose their body heat by not moving around a lot and that's how they keep warm.
