When Rubik's Cube first was popular I tried to find a solution with pencil and paper, based on rotations and so on. I never succeeded.

And I was a pretty decent algebraist. Nothing truly special, but I was the top student in my first-year group theory course.

No, just patterns of moves to get the colors where they need to be. Fastest time I solved it in High School in 1984!!! Was 45 seconds.

I don't see how it could be down to a formula. I can't even concieve of what the variables might be and where.
