What is so great about "emo"?

To me these kids are stupid. They all look the same and act the same. I thought the whole point of this was to show you were not a conformist, but if you are dressing up in black and cutting yourself like everyone else, isn't that conforming? Can someone please explain to me what the hell is so great about this stupid style. Yeah, and the music? Emo really isn't a music class. 10 years ago it was Alternative, 20 years ago it was "new wave" or "modern rock" and 30 years ago it was "punk". I recently saw someone class The Cure as Emo and I almost threw up and I bet Robert Smith would have also.

The word emo is becoming meaningless by the minute.
There is no such thing as "AN emo" it's just simply emo. It's a genre and a style.

Those who label themselves as emo as poseurs.
And those who label others "emo" without knowing what emo even originally was, are also poseurs.

I don't know how the whole cutting thing got warped with the genre. You've got little kids these days thinking "Oh, I want to be an emo because its cool. I have to cut myself to be an emo".
That is simply ridiculous.

These days, emo is known as a trend. It's not even about the music anymore. Also, many kids are confused about what real emo music is. You don't hear real emo music anymore. It started in the 80's and pretty much died in the 90's. Many bands these days are also INCORRECTLY label as emo. This is where the confusion stems.

Also, "emo" doesn't just simply stand for "emotional.
It stands for emotive HARDCORE.
It's a genre and a noun, not a freaking adjective used to label yourself or other people.

After emotive hardcore, it was shortened to emocore. Which is further shortened to emo.

BTW, The Cure, emo? WTF?! That's proof emo has become meaningless and is used to label bands incorrectly.

Emos rock. I am not one, but my friends are and their music and skinny jeans make them more interesting than any soccer prep would be.
Also, emo is the root word for emotional. Emos are more in touch with their senses and although many like wrists and razors, others are really cool people who have great music tastes.
Emo is definetly a music class. If Michelle Branch or Justin Timberlake can be considered singers, then bands like Fall Out Boy and Thirty Seconds To Mars can pass as music. I love emos, especially Pete Wentz.
Thirdly, not to rank on you, but it's called acceptance. Accept that others are not the same as you and move on. No offense.
Also, these kids are not stupid, but sometimes many are confused. Others however, are genuises in the back of the classroom.
This "stupid style" is a way of life for many and its just a cold pill you're gonna have to swallow. Even though I love the Emos, I do agree with you on the whole Emo The Cure thing.

what's so great about being prep? i mean, they all look the same, dress the same, mostly listen to the same music.... you can say the same exact thing as any 'class'.. emos and preps, you can say they both dress the same in their groups, act the same in their groups, think a certain way in their groups. i mean.. when rap first came out most people thought it was a phase, lookey here- it's not. it's stayed, and it's caused me to almost throw up.
