They've been replaced by buses that cover the country better with less infrastructure

Because like with all businesses that any government tries to run it became a fiasco. All the railroads were eventually sold to foriegn companies. Because Mexico ran them into the ground and the unions were killing the productivity.
In the US sometimes I will see here in Colorado engines on trains that came from Mexico.
My point is that in this case the unions and government in their ifinite wisdom ruined Mexican Passenger Rail.
Yes the buses go everywhere, as do the airlines. But rail travel can never be duplicated or beat.

I think they pretty much ran out of funding and the buses go absolutely everywhere. I would like to add that I used to take the train a lot in Mexico and it was great. The tracks go through places that are not near roads and there are wonderful sights to see. I will miss that greatly.

There are a few touristic trains, but the passenger trains stopped working because of the lack of investment (they were government managed).
There was an attempt to restart the service by an american company, but it was not worth the effort.
Today there are more cheaper airlines or bus travel.

biggest reason, 99% of them are sneaking into the USA by foot, In Mexico it would cost them for the ride, here, they crammed toether like sardines, any type truck, van will do
