In Nevada, prostitution is legal in some counties. They have to follow very tight liscencing laws, STD laws and be test regularally. Since 1986, when mandatory testing began, not a single brothel prostitute has ever tested positive for HIV.The mandatory condom law was passed in 1988. Now for the question, should Prostitution be legalized across the US?

I agree with scruffy. The selling of sex is a service business, just like any other. You can pay someone to get down on their hands and knees and scrub your dirty pubic hairs out of your toilet (maid), pay someone to give you a full body massage while you lie there naked (masseuse), pay someone to wipe your butt and give you a sponge bath (nurse or nurse's aide). And it's ok to go to a bar and screw a guy (or many guys) for free, to have threesomes, even film it, ok to make a porn movie where people have sex, or like scruffy said, pay someone to have sex in front of you. It's ok to marry someone for money to be a trophy wife, but not ok to have a straightfoward transaction like $$$ for a b-job? Ridiculous.

If someone is willing to pay for it, and someone is willing to sell it, then it becomes a commodity and a personal service just like anything else. Taking the mystery away, regulating and legalizing things in designated isolated areas like they have in most counties in Nevada aside from Clark County (where Las Vegas lies) will make things a lot less glamorous but also a lot safer for everyone.

I'm not interested in selling this service myself, but if I want to make a private agreement with a man as to how we spend our time for the next hour, that is no one else's business and only between the two of us.

I agree with MadelineSoCal.

I can give a man a b-job for a dinner and a movie, but to skip the dinner and just get the cash is a CRIME?!?! Ridiculous.

I find it interesting that so often, the reason NOT to legalize it is that women need to be protected. I'm sorry, but isn't that fact that it is currently ILLEGAL the reason that prostitutes are victimized? When something is illegal, then an abused person cannot go to the police. Their workplace is not under any scrutiny. Their working conditions or state of health are not regulated. Illegal prostitutes' pimps are basically running a protection racket - and like any protection racket, it's usually the person "collecting" that's the biggest threat.
I understand that part of the laws in Nevada are that a pimp/madam/brothel structure is required - but I'm not confident I'm right about that - if one wished to make it legal and not have women taken advantage of, allow self-employment and unions.

What's the big deal? Just because something is legal doesn't mean everyone's REQUIRED to do it. If you believe it's wrong, don't partake.

Prostitution is almost the oldest profession in this world and I wonder no one treats it as culture of world !! Rather its illegal almost all over the world. And at the same time this service is available every where. Without making it legal no one could stop it. When all other physical nursing can be sold under the term profession why not this one !

There is not much difference between a good nurse and a good prostitute. Both take care of a patient, both are paid for it. Only difference is nurses save life and prostitutes cures mind. ( All the respected nurses please do not mind - I do not have any intention to hurt your feelings )

When pre-marital sex, free sex and free mixing is legal why not paid sex !! If any two grown up persons have sex (paid or free whatever !!) whats the problem with the society. Who ever opposes for making prostitution legal - if is given a free hot girl - 90% of them would accept. We all will do every thing under the carpet and do not have courage to accept publicly.

This certainly is a contentious issue. In America, there is a whole class of people who are not protected by the law. They certainly don't become prostitutes by choice, but do so because they have no other options in life. The system has simply failed them. A s a result, they're doomed to having a life on the edge of society. If their pimp beats them, they cannot go to the police. If they get sick, they cannot go to the hospital. It is the oldest profession in history. There will always be prostitutes and people who make use of them. The question is, whether or not society will make it safe for both of them.

yes, and I feel that marijuana should be legal also. My reason is it makes law enforcement do their jobs and stop going after the small time criminals. If a woman decides to screw every man at her school it's her business. If she charges for it, it's still her business. My pet peeve is when these moral religious fanatics get up in arms about legalizing prostitution, and meanwhile their priests are getting arrested for molesting alter boys, or the pastor is getting arrested for soliciting a prostitute. They are all hypocrites!!!

I think it should be legalized because it would help protect the prostitutes. They would have legal recourse if they were abused or beaten; they wouldn't need pimps; and standards to protect against disease could be implemented. Also, I tend to think that legalization would reduce underage prostitution, which is a major concern.

Visualize this: fair trade prostitution, with workers organized into self-empowering co-ops working for a fair price. :)

i think so. it's ridiculous that you can pay someone to have sex with someone else in front of you, but you can't pay them to have sex with you. not that i think prostitution is a good thing, but i would like to see more legal protections put in place for them. too many are raped and/or killed... As far as the moral aspects, I think a woman should be allowed to do whatever she wants with her own body, even if i find it personally reprehensible. legalizing it, with strict legal oversight, would help protect these women who are currently completely beyond the help of the law.

Yes, just as has been for many in European countries: the sex workers there have their own trade unions!

Absolutely not. It's not just about public health concerns, but it also promotes trafficking in persons. Just take a look at all of the stolen young people from Eastern Europe, Central America, Asia etc. that have been trafficked into prostitution. Who benefits from all of this--just the traffickers and brothel owners etc. It certainly doesn't benefit the prostitute in the least.

No, a person who prostitutes him/herself is robbing him/herself and they should be protected from them self.
