I've seen words misspelled in a dictionary before. I knew the correct spelling.

many words have changed significantly from how our ancestors pronounced them/said them in mid ages, also the english spell things slightly differently on occasion (Coloured vs colored). A word gets into the dictionary because it is the common useage spelling of that word for that country. "Sumer is a coumin in Loude sing coo coou." was a middle ages song I learned in chorus. Summer is comming in is how it would be spelled today. It's also why 'aint' is now in the dictionary.lt is commonly used. But I've digressed, sorry. You can check a couple of sources to check the most common spelling, or google the word for a second opinion.

we wouldn't know, because the wrong spelling would then become the right spelling making the right spelling wrong.

i don't know, but if we figured it out they'd just have us knocked off and say it's a new spelling.
