I almost didn't try to answer your question, because I don't know about addiction rehabilitation. Then I realized that humility should be a part of all lives, and I decided to make contact with you. Humility is a part of a humble person, that is, a person who is modest, and does not think oneself better than other people. That thought can be expanded to not thinking your situation is worse than what other people have experienced. Christian education often concentrates on humility, but I don't see humility as related to religious beliefs.
Wikipedia includes this in the description of humility: a humble person acts without claiming the results as his; he achieves his merit and does not rest (arrogantly) in it: -- he does not wish to display his superiority.
An antonym of humility is arrogance (having overbearing pride). Every person would affect the world positively if individual humility was strived toward. One cannot be humble and greedy at the same time, in my thought. Wouldn't the world be better without greed? Rachel Carson (author of Silent Spring) said, "It is a wholesome and necessary thing for us to turn again to the earth and in the contemplation of her beauties to know of wonder and humility." Considering the thoughts other people have had about humility might help you on your quest. I've included links for that.
I send you my sincere wishes for serenity, humility and peace.

I think humility means being willing to admit that you don't know nearly as much as you thought, and being willing to submit to the authority and knowledge of someone else. It doesn't mean weakness, it means having an awareness of knowing that to God, we are all little children and in a process of growing. In addition, if you consider all the creations in the world, everything that God created has to follow the laws of physics. There are rules to everything. It is pride which causes people to think they can "beat the system" and break the rules, as if they were the only one in the universe or something. It's actually a sign of egocentrism and pride to be involved with substance abuse, but when you decide that there is an authority higher than you, and you are not that authority, then humility can be the result. If anger accompanies that realization, then it is not true humility. The anger must be eliminated and replaced by meekness and submission - it's not wimpiness, it's just recognizing that you have a place in the world and the world does not revolve around you.

Humility is a modest opinion or estimate of one's own importance, rank, etc. It's knowing that you are just as vulnerable as anyone else.
