Well, I recently just got an 8 month male Maltese Sunday and they had just come out of washing him. Can I wash him with regular shampoo like Herbal Essenes, Garnier Fructis, or Loreal Vive? He doesn't smell bad but he doesn't smell the greatest either though. And also is it time for me to wash him yet? And would it just be easier to get him groomed?

You actually need doggie shampoo. Dogs have special oils in their skin, and Maltese actually have hair and not fur. You should get your dog professionally groomed, but it can't hurt to give him a bath. Hylyte (i think that's the spelling) is a good one for dogs, and actually PetSmart sells a line of doggie spa stuff. I buy the Plumeria for my Yorkie. They also have Vanilla and some other scents. It smells like Bath and Body Works, but for dog. Also, don't hesitate to buy grooming spray (doggie perfume)!

I asked my groomer that same question. It is a bad idea to use human shampoo on a dog. Puppies have sensitive skin and human shampoo will dry him out. It can also cause irritation, itchiness and dandruff. I would go to a vet for the shampoo. They generally carry stuff in office and only want what is best for the puppy. They aren't going to charge you for the most expensive bottle they have like a groomer will. I stopped taking my dog to the groomer when she scolded me for supposedly not brushing my dog. I brush him all the time but he gets a lot of tangles. Now I just do it myself. It is a lot cheaper and less hassle. If you have a bath tub you can do it. As for is it time to wash him, I give mine a bath whenever he stops smelling good. If he has a slight smell, in he goes. If you don't want to deal with bathing him call around to all the groomers and get a price comparison. Ask what is included for the price. The first time it might be wise to ask if they have a viewing area where you can watch. My dog has never been mis treated but like with children and day care, you want to screen them to make sure they are going to treat your friend with care. Have fun and good luck.

Definitely do not wash him with human shampoo. And while you definitely can wash him yourself with puppy shampoo in the sink or in the tub (and beware, he's probably a lot smaller than you think!! We had a Maltese and the first time we bathed him, he looked like a little pink rat!!) but they HATE the water. And just when you think it's great and the bath is over, you have to blow him dry. It's not healthy for a Maltese to go around wet, they can get quite sick. If you want to save yourself the hassle, and have his tear stains cleaned as well, I recommend getting him groomed! Definitely worth it!

Hi! I wash my puppies with doggy shampoo that you can get at petco, petsmart.or even walmart. I wasn't sure if I would like the smell of puppy shampoo but they have really good smelling ones! And I probably wouldn't use human shampoo just because It could irritate the puppies skin! Good luck and I hope that helped!

Baby shampoo works just fine but NOT to often. thats where all of the skin problems come from. Dogs have natural oil that needs to stay on the skin. Make sure you brush often and as always you can call any vet and get this kind of advice for free from an expert.

NO Dogs have a different ph bal than we do. You will dry his poor skin out and cause irritation. Dog shampoo is not expenisive. Dogs should only be bathed about once a month. Give him a good brushing.

Yes, it would be easier to get him groomed, they have all the best stuff for dogs. And its only like $20.00.

If you get your shampoo in his eyes, that would be bad.

You can use human shampoo, but I would recommend using one that is a "no tears" formula, in case it gets in his eyes.

Yeah, it's fine. Just keep an eye out for allergies to the fragrances.
