I'm guessing they haven't taught you sex education yet in school? It's called mestruation. Just look it up on the internet if school hasn't taught you yet. - its when a female body matures to the point where she is now able to become pregnant. Her body produces ova (eggs) which is what would become an embryo, then a fetus, and then a baby at maturity. Every month her body will produce an egg (its microscopic at that point) and if she is not impregnated, it leaves her body with a build up of blood that lines her uterus and she has "a period". - aprox 5 days of bleeding. That's the basics - 5 days of bleeding. Then it starts all over again, 28 days later.

Menstruation
Main article: Menstruation
Menstruation is also called menstrual bleeding, menses, or a period. This bleeding serves as a sign that a woman has not become pregnant. (However, this cannot be taken as certainty, as sometimes there is some bleeding in early pregnancy.) During the reproductive years, failure to menstruate may provide the first indication to a woman that she may have become pregnant. A woman might say that her "period is late" when an expected menstruation has not started and she might have become pregnant.
its basically when a women loses the egg from her body
