One of the first applications built to find and remove adware and spyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition's excellent reputation is well justified. The sky-blue, skinnable interface features five buttons. The first two, Status and Scan, lead to the core function of the application. These buttons initiate a scan of your files for adware components. After scanning is complete, the program presents a summary of results, followed by a list from which you select exactly which components to remove. Right-clicking an individual entry gives some information about the piece of suspected adware, though we would like more details.

Ad-Aware SE can alert you to more malignant forms of malware by separating items into critical and negligible categories. The third button, Ad-Watch, is nonfunctional in the Standard version. The fourth button, Plug-ins, shows you which Ad-Aware plug-ins are installed. The fifth leads to the help files.Ad-Aware SE does an excellent job of quickly finding and removing most adware and spyware components, although you will have to restart and rescan for a seriously infected machine. We were pleased to see an auto-update feature included with the program, keeping Ad-Aware up-to-date with the latest adware components. Ad-Aware SE should be part of your arsenal for keeping your machine free of adware and spyware components.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

You really need to pick one antivirus and only install one at a time. Having more than one at a time installed creates conflicts and makes your system MORE vulnerable. Sounds to me like you installed AVG AND MS security essentials. Now people are suggesting others. ALWAYS uninstall your current antivirus completely BEFORE installing a new one. I use AVG for antivirus and Zone alarm firewall. Windows defender is just prevents malware from installing without your permission and blocks pop up ads. It's not an antivirus or firewall. For adware/spyware protection (I don't really need it, 'cause I'm not stupid) I recommend Malwarebytes antimalware. Norton is crap! sure it works, but it's bloated. Paid antivirus is a waste of money, and isn't any better.

There are two ways to accomplish this: Working 'inside the Microsoft Box", grab shootthemessenger, avast, AVG, Lavasoft's ADAWARE, Spybot S&D, and crapcleaner. Also, go to google and search for a free firewall to run. Like ZoneAlarm.

Pros: Well, that all works for a while, but, you also need to defrag every month.

Cons: Nag screens galore, more updates, on top of the Microsoft ones, plus, overhead to bog down your computer, and you.

"Outside the Microsoft box": Get an old PC box. Any Pentium class from 200 Mhz up to 800Mhz with 32 to 64Mb RAM will do.
http://ipcop.org is the free firewall you burn to CDrom, and install on any hard drive in that box, from 1 Gb up to 20 Gb.

Great protection, and then, grab http://pclinuxos.com
and burn the CDrom and let it run Live in your CD on your computer, in a Virtual RAM Disk! This is for anytime you are on the Internet! It has Opera, Firefox, NVU, and Konqueror! When done, log out, and let it reboot to your old Microsoft system!

Yes there is. You go on-line to a website such as "geeks on the go" and follow the instructions to download some helpful stuff. I did it over a year ago and it probably saved my old Window 98 computer.
