Each ring represents a year. You can tell if it was a dry year or a wet year but the individual sizes of the rings. There is a whole story to be told when you cut down a tree. You should read 'A Sand County Almanac' by Aldo Leopold if you are confused.

Yes, I grew up in a logging family and was raised in an area in Oregon where there are lots of mountains and trees. I tried it just to see if I could, but I chose a small tree, I can't remember how many rings it had, a LOT more than I thought, it was very small in circumfrance but had a couple hundred rings on it. It took a lot of concentration. Can you tell I had a lonley childhood, lol!!

As a landscaper, I've done this many times. Some of the trees I've cut down have gone back past the "depression." By the way, I cut them down due to the trees being diseased.

yeah, when i was about 7! It was no fun. Well, about as fun as eating dirt. I tried that too. The neighbor kids said it would prove i was tough. ate the glass. sliced my tongue. spent the weekend in hospital. dog died while i was there. and we had to move. when i came back we lived in a dump. in the basement. no windows. that wasnt a problem until the fire. its getting hot in here. stop drop and roll. im okay. but my turtle turned into soup. tasted kinda like the pea soup in the school cafeteria. i threw that up. my teacher made me eat it anyway. i threw up again in her hair. my mom cut all my hair off just to be mean. thats when i ran away. lived on the streets for 6 years. just till i was old enough to steal. me and robby ate good after that. used to sit on the tree stump out back of the supermarket and have dinner. counted that stump too. just for old times sake. it wasnt no fun then either.

Yeah, every day, I am obsessive compulsive, if I don't count the rings by midnight each night, something really, really bad will happen, I just know it!

Yes, I have because that's the way you can tell the age of the tree.
