it does, if it can hear itself.

Sound wave is carried on the air between the action and to where it creates a sensation in the ear of a person or an animal or anything that has auditory perception. (A simplistic explanation.)
Old folks have asked me that question and I always say that lacking an ear drum for that sound to resonate upon, the sound wave would dissipate and there would be no sound recorded.
Believe it or not, you can find some otherwise erudite people who disagrees with me. Now, how can that be???

If the tree did, in fact, fall and did, in fact, hit something that it will produce sound waves/vibrations. These may or may not be classified as a "sound" since it was not heard.

Depends on how you define sound. If you define it as a pressure differential in the air, the answer is yes. If you define it as an auditory effect then possibly not if no creature possessing hearing was not present.

I've never understood why people think this is such a difficult question.
Sound is the product of "sound waves". They exist, even if an "ear" isn't present.
It's like asking "If I turn on a lamp in a room and nobody is in the room... does the light exist?" Of course it does.

Sound doesn't have to be heard by humans to be sound. If it makes noise then it does make a sound. If you think that it has to be heard - the forest creatures hear it....

geez...yes, it makes a sound.
The falling tree or any animate object will give off or "emit" an audible sound....
We, having ears, our organs of hearing, that act as "receptors", just may not be there to hear it....this doesn't mean that no sound was made.
