Obviously this differs depending on the police officer. Some will be lazy and go for the easy stuff, and others will maybe want a big "attaboy" and try for something with more notoriety. Most will however, attend to whatever crime they happen to see, or have their attention called to. Just like any group of people, a few "less than perfect" individuals on a police force can taint the entire force.

Now, let's go further....After a crime is commited and an arrest is made;

Way too many people are sitting in jails for petty offences that should not incur a jail sentence. I believe in public service as a punishment for minor infractions. We sorely need people to clean parks, streets, assist in public buildings, libraries, etc etc. And having the jails filled with these petty offenders leads to overcrowding, which leads to REAL criminals getting lighter sentences, or even being released when they shouldn't be.

The real problem lies in the court and legislative systems where the type of punishment is decided and interpreted. "Go to jail" is way overused (and extremely expensive too). Alternative punishments for minor offenders is sorely needed for many reasons.

Obviously this is not an answer per se. It is my opinion. However the question was worded so as to solicit an opinion, by asking, "Do you think..."

To an extent. At the same time, it's a preventative measure. If police don't spend time on the smaller stuff, it permits otherwise good people to start committing crimes which would ultimately lead to an increase of more serious offenses.

No. I think petty criminals want to be allowed to do whatever they want at the expense of everyone else rather than be held accountable for the slime they are.

I think every crime should be punished, or don't make it a crime.

Simple enough.

Sometimes maybe... or is it that sometimes there are so many major crimes that the petty crimes are allowed to slide?

Yes, but that's human nature to avoid the most fear and work. That doesn't excuse it by any means, however.
