Descriptive Writing?

i need to write a descriptive essay on a shopping centre but have no idea where to start! has anyone got any ideas? i have to use as much descriptive detail as possible.

It kinda depends on what kind of shopping center you're writing about, but I'm going to assume you mean a mall.

First of all, start by describing what you "see." Are there lots of people, or only a few? Are they in a hurry? What about the stores? Do flashy signs catch your attention? What about the items the stores are selling? Are some of them antique-like?

Next, describe what you "hear." Is there a toddler crying, with the mother desperately trying to calm her? Is there a person comeing up to you asking you to take a survey?

Now, describe the smells. Is that pretzel stand calling your name? Are you in a shoe store with that funky leathery odor? What about the coffee you bought?

If you want, you can even add things about what you can feel or taste. Is it chilly in the mall, or too hot? What about the pizza that's oozing with cheese?

The most important thing is details! And make the details very creative, not banal phrases like "glaring sun" or "hard asphalt." I would approach it as if I were walking into the shopping center. What is it like going through the parking lot? Describe the five senses...people almost always forget smell, so use it to be original. Focus on little things, such as interesting shadows or flower arrangements. Make it realistic...how does the temperature / noise level change when you enter a store? I would aim for realistic descriptions, not flowery language.

Here is a way to do it. I had a writing teacher assign me to do this to learn how to be descriptive. Imagine you are an alien and have no idea what a mall is. You have to write a report to you home world tell them what it is and what it like. I had to tell the colors involved, the sounds, the odors(ie the food courts is an example), and the general atmosphere--is it fun exciting, routine, boring. take it from there and fun with it.
