In your house sticky traps work well. You put them up against walls, behind furniture. Yes its icky but the droppings can make you seriously ill. In your yard, find their burros, and get some solid poison. Stuff it down there hard and put something heavy on top. The rats will have to et their way out, thus killing them. (There are also traps that you can put under your house that you can refill with poison...but I would be leery of those if you have pets)That's what I was told, by the exterminator guy.

If you have no pets you can use Decon, but otherwise; you will need to use a trap. Notice where they may be entering the premises and place the trap in that vicinity. Be sure not to leave any food for the rodents on the counters or floor. There are only a few things in the cupboard that they will go after. If you store such things in the refrigerator that will also help. STICKY TRAPS are disgusting. With regular traps you do not need to touch the dirty critters you can sort of dump them into the garbage.

That's a tough question.
I would use mouse traps, but I would hate being the one to clean that up.
When I was younger and we have a rodent problem, my mother got a cat.
It was very effective.
The cat attacked some rats and scared the rest away.
But of course, a cat is not for everyone, and may be perceived as cruel.
To reduce the problem, keep foods in cupboards and refrigerators, and seal tightly.
Don't leave food lying around where a rat can come along, and find it, and invite their family to feast.

We went to an outdoor/camping/sports store (okay, it was Gander Mountain) and bought a live trap. It's like a little cage with a trap door on each end... it doesn't kill or hurt what is caught inside. They have different sizes, but you will want the one for rats & small squirrels. We had noises in the attic and one-at-a-time we caught 3 small rats. The first one my son shot. The 2nd one died before we found it in the trap. The last one I took a few miles away and turned loose on a country road. Never had to touch any of 'em.

I read on a web site about using fabric softener sheets for mice. I was beginning to see evidence of mice in my cupboards. I bought Bounce fabric softener sheets and put one in each cupboard and have not been bothered since.

I don't like the sticky things because it seems cruel, a long death, as they are usually alive, unless they stick their nose on the paper and suffocate. I have herd of poison that kills them right away.
