The dollar is at a 14 yr low vs the British pound sterling. So the international community believes its not as rosy as Bush paints it. Bush's speech at the NYSE wasnt very convincing since he stated "Our economy is #1" something that generally would go without saying. Overall if all the numbers we are quoted such as low unemployment, a soft landing for the housing crunch... I dont see why we arent gaining ground against the Pound or the Euro. We are holding steady or losing ground. You cant rack up deficit spending for the budget and tell the world that in 2012 we might have a balanced budget without repercussions. The whopper trade deficit combined with a recession in manufacturing really gets to the heart of what we need to do as a country. I think on a specific note Ford with 17 B losses and its factories mortgaged for a total 20B lets us know its not all roses for the US. Its pretty clear they are headed for chapter 11 likely going to let a Judge decide they are off the hook for their pension plans and operate largely like the airline industries.

I am a little older then you so:

From my experience we had a recession in the mid 60's, in the early 70's with extreme interest rates of 18%, a recession in the early 80's and a very bad one in the late 80's into the 90's.. There has not been a major recession since. However the economy was slow to take off. It has been accelerating at a moderate rate until today. Bush's tax cuts placed a lot more money in peoples hands and probably staved off a coming recession. We have the highest economic activity ever, with the lowest unemployment rate ever at under 4%- and no inflation upturns. Still low interests rates and just enough inflation to encourage investment.

I do not understand the media's constant effort to portray the last 10 years economy as terrible.

Hope this is of help. The construction industry is the most volatile leader/indicator of all industries. Very sensitive to intrest rates and inflation..

It is pretty much at an all time high in every aspect. The only thing that one can really say as criticism about our economy is that it is so good right now, that it can only go down from here. You really can't get better than near perfect.

Our economy has been growing at a mid/upper teens growth rate since 2003. It is doing just fine. There's a great article in the Wall Street Journal from dec5 2005 (i think that's the date) that discusses why nobody know's how good the economy is. It's called "Pouting Pundits of Pessimism."

great for large corporations and the military industry ... but the dollar in my pocket keeps buying less and less ... i think the economy is propped up by global conflict, is what i really think, and it doesnt take a genius to figure out that the current debt-based banking system thats generating gargantuan debt, and an economy supported by war ... just cant go on forever without some kind of change or reform ...

Right now we are in the midst of a recession but it is not very severe. But looking into the long term, I would say Americans have a lot to worry about as our trade def. is worsening and countries like China for example are having HUGE trade surpluses due to the worsening of our economy.

In Michigan it is poor, I go by my hometown news paper for this one. 7 years ago, when I opened to the classifieds there was a half to a full page of job openings, Today there were 5 advertised jobs. It has been that way for a long time.

The markets are doing well. Unemployment is low. Housing construction is stable. I'd say we're doing pretty well. The debt is up though, so it will come back to bite us at some point.
