As with everything else, the concept that brought unions into existence was a brilliant one with a humanitarian goal. It is in the implementation and eventual running of the concept where people deviate, sometimes to the negative side. In other words, human nature got in the way . . .

I have been a union member (IBEW) for almost 18 years and have never been happier. You obviously know little about unions. I hope that you realize that such items as 40 hour work weeks, Workman's comp., minimum wage, etc. were all fought for and won by unions. If it were not for unions, the modern day workplace would be drastically different; can you say Mexico? No union wants to see a business go under, they simply want their members to receive fair wages and benefits for their labor. You can not blame the workers of GM for its poor performance. Poor management and corporate greed are the big culprits. Surely you can see the corporate greed that is running rampant across the US. CEO's and executives are receiving obscene amounts of compensation even when their companies are performing poorly. Why do you think Honda pays a fair wage? Its to keep unions out. Every one of those Honda workers should be thankful for unions since they are benefiting from unions without paying dues. I'm not saying unions are perfect but God help us if they ever go away. We will become the next third world country.

I think the unions got out of hand a few years ago and management went along with the proposals. I think the retirement benefits gained for pilots and other airline workers put most of the airlines in bankruptcy and now Ford and GM are barely making it because the health insurance benefit payments for current and retired workers is using up most of the money that is taken in. The poor retirees in the steel industry were counting on a nice retirement check and health benefits and now there is no longer much of a steel industry to stand behind what the unions got for the employees. Is it the chicken or the egg that's the problem, I don't know.

This is a tough issue -- While I believe that the unions have served their purpose and brought up the standard of living for everyone in the U.S. they still sort of insure that business can't run roughshod over labor. The threat of unionization is a pretty big hammer. The U.S. auto industry is an example of unions run amuck where the benefits they acquired for the workers ultimately cost the very jobs they were trying to protect. I have been in several unions and never saw any benefit to unionization in any of them. Of the companies that have moved manufacturing out of the country most were union.

Your assessment on unions is the same as mine. You pay alot of money into your union dues and all they do is keep the unproductive people employed. Employers should pay their employees well for a job well done and not becuase they have been working there the longest. Unions hurt the economy.

Unions were created to protect people from being mistreated in the workplace. Now, we have laws to protect laborers. Unions are no longer needed, and yes, they protect lazy people and overpay lazy people. They hurt the economy.
