I would love to have her job but know this would look like I was swooping in after her job. Is there a way I can do this without looking like I was just waiting for the ball to drop on her?

Simple. You usually apply for a job with a School District - not a specific school. You can request a specific school, but don't have to. If you apply now, and let her know you'd like to work for that school district, it won't be a surprise when she loses her position that you are interviewing.

There may also be more slots than hers available at that school, of which you are unaware.

So put in your application now, and if you are worried about appearances - just apply with the District. If they like you, they will call you in to interview. And you may or may not get the job - just like anyone else. There may be other candidates, too.

WHy do you care what she thinks, she is yesterday's news.
Apply!
And dont feel guilty about it. Do you think for one second that she wouldnt do it to you if it were the other way around?

Talk to the principal and let him know that you have an interest. It will give him an opportunity to view you as a contender thus giving you the edge over other applicants.

It's not your fault she didn't get hired back, right? I am sure she would understand you want to be happy at your job.

Plus, she may be disgusted by the whole experience and get a corporate job making twice as much as you. Don't sweat it.

Talk to the hiring agent, not the other teachers. Ask that your intentions not be made public until the end of the year..

Don't be so concerned with appearances.

If the school administration needs to fill a slot and they pick you as the best qualified applicant -- so be it.
