it's based on the kinetic energy of the gas molecules. The faster the molecules are moving (higher temperature), the more impactful each molecular collision is. Likewise, the more molecules you shove into a given volume, the more frequently you have collisions against the wall. This is why you get higher pressure be increasing temperature or decreasing volume.
