It is really quite true. When I go to Japan for a few weeks, I always see females holding hands, going arm and arm, and even having their arms around each other. Sometimes you will see one female with her head on the shoulder of other women. However, my aunt says it is a means of closeness and security.
I have an Asian friend who I hold hands with and go arm and arm with. In most cities, I have noticed people looking. We even were asked to leave a restaurant in a large Texas City. These other answerer's can write what they wish, but it is really a case of being homophobic.
If I was with you, I would like to hold your hand also, You are really beautiful.

I never frown upon two women holding hands or going arm in arm. Usually the ones I see doing it are teenagers and you can tell that they are best friends, nothing wrong with that.

This has not been my experience at all. I find it is quite okay for women to hold hands or go arm in arm in Canadian cities. It is definitely not okay in small towns, where all public affection is treated as evidence of a sexual relationship. I am a woman myself, and find handholding to be quite okay. What is really interesting is interracial hand-holding between women. That gets a look or two. However, who really cares???

I guess you have never been in the Bay Area. You see it all the time here and it is not remarked upon to any degree that I know of. Generally, you see arm in arm, but some Vietnamese still walk holding hands. I have rarely seen this, though.

Men kiss each other still in the East, Jews do it and in Christian communities you are exorted to kiss one another with a holy kiss. It is Eastern culture. People that are straight used to do it, but now it is identified with something altogether different! It's a shame, because it does not make a cohesive loving society. It's a cultural identity crisis!

because it really is a sense of protection. women quite like it even as their husband/boyfriend grabs their hand. My Fiance walks beside me and would not even contact me...and it kinda makes me unhappy after I see all the different couples holding palms and embracing. :( that's only a element women love i wager. I wish extra men may do it.

part of it is homophobia, yes. but i really think it's about our culture equating any kind of physical affection with a sexual relationship.
