Excellent question. They float above the floor. If they wish to, they can go through floors into the level below by sinking down and coming out the ceiling.

The answer to that is simple but you must first understand the theory behind the answer. Amongst many schools of thought about ghosts there is one that I have heard of from a TV programme years ago called `The Mysterious World of Arthur C. Clarke`.
On one of his shows about ghosts he had a theory that when you see ghosts you are actually seeing a clip of the past which is somehow being replayed. The medium of this replay is apparently meant to be somehow stored in the bricks and mortar of the building or edifice where the apparition appears, and it is also only when you are in a certain emotional state.
Therefore over time walls and boundaries can change but the floor level generally stays the same. Hence when a ghost seems to walk thorough wall it was probably because at sometime in the past the wall was not there, but the floor was very likely to be at the same level.
This is just one possible explanation and you don't have to believe it, but logically it is the most likely.

A "ghost" is usually defined as the visible spirit of a deceased person. The places where these ghosts haunt are usually older homes or buildings which have been remodeled. Hence the ghost is walking through what may have been a doorway in his or her era, but has long since been made into a wall. The floor has not changed position, in most cases, so the ghost still walks on the floorboards that were there in the era it was alive.

ghosts do not only walk through walls but the reason is that in there dimension there is a doorway there and they will always haunt the part that familiars them with.
you talk as though you think Ghosts are a shape of a person but you would be very wrong.orbs are lights that drift then you have the smoke hazey drifting or smells of scent, etc a good one is pipe tobacco.
so i hope the question is answered.

No logical answer for you mate... I have never seen one and I can't tell you why they don't drop through the floor maybe they defy gravity or just don't want to. I am pretty sure they can though if they wanted to since they can come through walls.

We have ghosts that go through our walls but we have ceramic floors and they don't seem to fall through.

It's a bit technical but stay with me. Floors are for living beings. Ghosts float. Walls are not a problem. The biggest problem ghosts have is believability. Thy don't exist. They find that a real bummer.

maybe because they are light. But i heard that ghosts can move through air if they already know that they were dead and walk if they still don't because they still feel that they're alive and can't fly (you know humans can't fly). They can walk through walls maybe because they're gas (solids still have space for air molecules to pass through).=) happy Goose Bumps!
