I was shopping today and happened to look at a cd I already own when I noticed that now there are two cds in it now instead of one. It has that same songs on each, but according to the back one cd is the original stereo album and the second cd is the original mono album. Can anyone tell me the difference? Do I need both? Thanks!

For all who asked, its the Monkees cds. I love them. Although the Kinks and others mentioned are awesome too.

I would suggest that this is likely a recording that was originally made before the days of stereo, this means a long time ago before almost everybody was born except for people like me.

If you have the stereo version it will have been electronically remastered using the original mono single channel recording to give it a stereo two channel effect.

Get the two CD album if you want to hear how it originally sounded in the days before the technology of stereo that we all take for granted.

The difference is that the original album is Mono, and the second album is a remastered, stereo version of the same music.

I can't tell you if you Need both. If you are a die hard fan of this music, and you collect everything they release, even if it's a CD single with two songs on it, then you should buy it.

I wouldnt think that you need both?
I would think that the stereo one would sound better.
IT is probably the musician's attempt to get more money (sounds like an older musician or group) so maybe they were digitally remastered in stereo after several requests to do the same.
Check on ebay and see how much both versions are selling for.
If you are really curious (and alot of other people are too, ) why not buy the second one and sell the first one )

If you already have the stereo version, you don't need to buy it. You may want to anyway, it's always interesting to hear both versions, but it's not necessary, by any means. By any chance, is it a Kinks cd?

Stereo means that there are two audio parts in the music data as "left" and "right" . Mono means that there is only one audio in the music data. You may hear differend sounds from left and right part of your speaker with stereo audio, but with mono audio data there is same sound from each speakers. It does not matter how many speakers you have.
