Hi. Two reasons. If they were in a serial connection then when one burned out they would both go out, and two, so they can get just as much current as they need.

If the car headlights would be connected in series you would loose both when 1 burns out.

When connected in series, if one light blows, both lights would go out. In parallel, electricity is still able to power the good light.

If they were in serie, a failure in one light would open the circuit and prevent the other one from working at all.
